On the day I am writing this, ore will be unearthed, water will be rerouted, energy will be supplied, ocean cables will be laid, servers and data centers will be constructed, people will move through the world, and their data will be extracted and aggregated -- in order to build AI. Today alone, resulting AI systems will process the data of billions of people, mass disseminating particular ideologies, embedded in tools, toys, surveillance, weapons, and more. And yet, despite AI being increasingly enmeshed in our lands and lives, how many times has a wise person said to me - quick words, as if it's a small confession - that they know nothing of AI.In this dissertation, we will compost the stories that say AI is an apolitical, enigmatic, and universal black box. We will draw on critical theory, a decolonial orientation, stories, archives, large computational analysis, critical data studies, and qualitative and quantitative findings. Our areas of focus include AI ecologies, AI research, AI systems, and AI applications. And our findings include planetary extraction, power-centralizing patterns in the research, colonial ideologies in state-of-the-art systems, and expanding networks of surveillance. Taking all of this together, what we see is another view of the shape of AI.Like an hourglass tipped on its side, there are expansive planetary processes, funneling into a tight bottleneck made out of just a few power-centralizing institutions and technologies. And that tiny bottleneck has determined what version of AI comes out. Many communities at the margins have been made to feel AI cannot be understood, let alone challenged or changed. After years of studying AI, this is a small offering for all of us who can and will understand, use, resist, dismantle, or transform AI.
