Few studies have examined parenting styles and adolescent rebelliousness as predictors of life satisfaction in adulthood. This study addressed this limitation by assessing the perceived parenting styles of female caregivers as measured by the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), recollections of adolescent rebelliousness as measured by the Social Reactivity Scale (SRS), and life satisfaction as measured by the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) among adult females ages 18-44 years old living in the United States. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted. Results indicated that authoritative and permissive parenting styles were significantly associated with life satisfaction. Significant associations were also found between authoritarian and permissive parenting styles with recollections of proactive rebelliousness. Finally, a hierarchical regression analysis indicated that permissive parenting style and proactive rebelliousness predicted life satisfaction. These findings emphasize the importance of caregivers providing a balance of structure, guidance, warmth, and support within various environments to their daughter(s).
