Influence of Servant Leadership on Catholic Pastors: A Qualitative Descriptive Study /Rajasekar Karumelnathan. - 1 electronic resource (328 pages)

This qualitative descriptive study explored the influence of servant leadership on Catholic pastors. It was not known how Catholic pastors in the Southeastern United States Region describe the influence of servant leadership. Robert Greenleaf coined the term servant leadership, which provides the theoretical framework for this study. In this study, two research questions guided the research: how Catholics describe servant leadership, and how Catholic pastors describe the influences of servant leadership in their pastoral ministry? Data were collected from total of 19 participants. The ten different participants took part in semi-structured interviews and nine other different participants took part in the two focus groups. Data were analyzed inductively using Braun and Clarke' six phases of thematic analysis. As a result of the research, 13 themes were identified that addressed the two research questions. The following three themes addressed RQ1: Catholic Pastors' Description of Servant leadership, Different Identity of Servant Leadership by Catholic Pastors, and Challenges of Servant Leadership in the pastoral ministry. The following ten themes addressed RQ2: Characteristics of listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to growth of people, and building community. These themes revealed that the Catholic pastors are influenced greatly by servant leadership by highlighting how participants understood servant leadership and its challenges and how each characteristic of servant leadership influenced them in doing the effective pastoral ministry.
