Adverse childhood experiences, also known as ACEs, have been associated with toxic stress which leads to negative outcomes in children's physical health, socio-emotional wellbeing, and learning behavior. Adverse childhood experiences have lasting impacts that go on to affect the individual's future health. About 64% of U.S adults have reported to experience one or more adverse childhood experiences before the age of 18 (CDC, 2023). This study aimed to provide further evidence on the negative relationship between adverse childhood experiences and academic performance at the state level controlling for minority and poverty. The 2022 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) was used to determine the average percentage of adverse childhood experiences per state, and the 2022 National Assessment Educational Progress (NAEP) was used to determine 4th/8th grade reading and math proficiency per state. A sample of 48 states were obtained. The data collected for this study included demographics of each variable. Scatter plots to determine possible outliers. Correlation matrix between the variables by using Pearson's correlation analysis. To determine the influence the variables have on student proficiency a linear regression analysis was conducted. The results showed that adverse childhood experiences were a significant predictor of both 4th/8th grade reading and math proficiency. While minority was only significant in math proficiency and poverty was insignificant throughout the study. Therefore, indicating that adverse childhood experiences strongly influence academic outcome.
