Ultramarathon running is an extreme endurance sport with dramatically increased participation over the past two decades. Despite its growth, ultrarunning and motivations for participation remain misunderstood by many in the general public. Furthermore, the scientific literature lacks consensus as to who ultramarathon runners are. The current available research on ultramarathon runners primarily focuses on biology, physiology, or nutrition, but scant research exists on ultramarathon runners' latent traits. The current study used cluster analysis to distinguish subgroups of ultramarathon runners according to psychological variables, health behaviors, and personality traits. Adults who have completed at least one ultramarathon in the past year (N = 125) were recruited through the ULTRA listserv and social media postings. Self-report questionnaires assessed demographic information, ultramarathon motivations, psychological functioning, personality, substance use, experiences of potentially traumatic events, and emotional intelligence. Three distinct clusters emerged from analyzing runners' five-factor personality traits and emotional intelligence: Sociables, Resilients, and Solitaries. The clusters were characterized by additional biopsychosocial variables including ultramarathon motives, psychopathology symptoms, and substance use. The taxonomy of this unique group of athletes was contrasted with previous ultramarathon runner research including previous cluster analysis research. The study's results provide necessary empirical data for the literature and a fertile starting point for sports psychologists to effectively design mental skills training for ultramarathon runners.
