While the act of caring, and how one goes about caring, has been a core feature within other human services-dedicated professions (e.g., nursing, teaching, and social work) and the research within those professions, the same cannot be said of academic librarianship-or within librarianship at large. This sequential, explanatory mixed-methods study focused on the experiences, attitudes, behaviors, and mindsets of academic librarians engaged in public services work (e.g., research assistance and instructional services) in anticipation of developing a unique theory of care for their caring labor. The following theoretical constructs were foundational for this research: Mayeroff's "philosophy of caring" (1971), Noddings's "relational theory of care" (1984, 2013), Watson's "theory of transpersonal caring" (2005), and the "five phases of care" developed by Tronto (1993, 2013) and Tronto and Fisher (1990). The study employed a survey (n = 418) followed by interviews with a subset of survey respondents (n = 15). The survey explored whether academic librarians' caring labor aligns with (or diverges from) any of the caring theories identified above, and examined how they go about defining and doing "caring labor." Interviews further explored how this population engages in caring labor and used the data to establish themes and boundaries to this caring labor.Research findings encouraged the development of a theory of care unique to the caring labor done by academic librarians engaged in research assistance and instruction work-a theory of coactive caring-featuring the following six core components: mutual engagement, empathy, listening, whole-person recognition, courageous motivation, and resolution resilience. The caring relation between academic librarians and student-patrons and the theory proposed herein suggests avenues by which the field of library science may better understand itself on a theoretical level, better prepare library science students for the field, better prepare administrators for leadership and management roles, and facilitate further study on research assistance, instruction, and other student-patron engaged work, to name a few of many possibilities.
