The Great Gatsby is one of the most commonly taught books in high school English classrooms. Educators frequently teach Gatsby by pinpointing the novel's use of symbolism, various themes, and portrayal of the American Dream. While Gatsby remains a staple of most eleventh-grade English classes, the novel possesses the unique ability to alter how students view controversial subjects. By framing Gatsby as a complex social document imbued with historical significance, this thesis portfolio provides educators with the tools for exploring Gatsby's class insecurities, gender stereotypes, and racial discrimination. As a fictional book, Gatsby provides educators with the ability to broach controversial topics in the classroom; moreover, Gatsby can serve as an important classroom tool if educators supply students with relevant historical context, allow for consideration of social topics, foreground student interpretation, and revisit the value of close reading. As my analysis will reveal, Gatsby can expand student perspectives and change how kids view traditional literature, but this requires modifying how educators teach The Great Gatsby. By consulting with this resource, teachers will discover a framework for discussing Gatsby's class insecurities, gender stereotypes, and racial discrimination in the classroom. Additionally, educators will find valuable lesson plans and educational videos that can help teachers foreground student interpretation and guide students to a deeper understanding of the events in The Great Gatsby.
