Previous research on social media suggests that the existence of echo chambers can have significant implications for the mental health and overall well-being of social media users. Many popular social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter engage in the construction of algorithms that suit the interests of individual users. These algorithms are homogeneous in nature and have the tendency to create echo chambers in which users are exposed exclusively to like minded content. This paper draws on Stakeholder Theory and the framework of corporate social responsibility to argue that social media companies hold an ethical obligation to minimize the negative implications of echo chambers on their platform. PART I of this paper will utilize the framework of corporate social responsibility and Stakeholder Theory to analyze the effectiveness of social media policies in mitigating the negative implications associated with engagement-based algorithms. In addition, PART II of the study will examine whether company efforts to reduce the negative implications associated with echo chambers affects the likelihood that users will engage with a social media platform. To this end, we employ a conjoint survey experiment to test the effect of echo chamber policy on user engagement. The results of the experiment showcase that when given the option to choose between social media platforms, users are more likely to prefer the platform that has implemented policies to limit harm from echo chambers. In addition, we find that knowledge about the general harms of social media echo chambers increases this likelihood.
