In Elif Batuman's The Idiot, we are presented with Selin, a Turkish American main character beginning her college years. Her narration provides us with an intimate look into the disappointment and disillusionment she experiences as she enters the world of adulthood, one that she initially believed would be somehow more real and important than childhood. Batuman extends this discussion even further in the novel's sequel Either/Or, which follows Selin as she embraces the college lifestyle in the midst of profound heartbreak. The autobiographical nature of both novels acts as Batuman's assertion of the intertwined nature of life and literature, positing that a life lived through literature is a meaningful and active one. By naming her novels after popular and influential works, she provides an updated mediation on the ideals presented in these works. Through the representation of a young Turkish American woman as the vehicle through which these ideals are communicated, she departs from a world of literature in which women and those within marginalized communities are often not able to tell their own stories. Selin's layered and complex identity ultimately demonstrates the positive ramifications of producing literature that aims to capture real life and real personhood rather than crafting characters whose fictionality necessitates a sense of falseness and unreality.
