The 12th century Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio of Palermo stands culturally and linguistically at the intersection of the Islamic Eastern Mediterranean and Christian Southern Europe. Built by the Syrian-born admiral of a Norman Christian king, its Arabic, Greek, and Latin inscriptions demonstrate how a space of religious, cultural, and political messaging cannot be read using traditional means alone. Such a space must be read multidimensionally, incorporating spatial-cultural context and other media into hermeneutical analyses of the texts that would otherwise be hindered by traditional descriptions of a space. The dimensions of La Martorana's cultural space must be matched by a similarly multidimensional hermeneutic medium. At the center of "Experiencing Arab-Norman Palermo: Close Reading Cultural Heritage in 2D and 3D" lies a series of three-dimensional models of the interior and exterior of the church that answer this hermeneutic problem. Inscriptions, mosaics, friezes, and decorative panels serve as the texts in a labyrinthine encounter between the material and the phenomenological. Between interpretation and experience, a new concept of the digital surrogate and its function in digital humanities emerges. Employing the concept of "orientational" reading, the digital surrogates demonstrate how medieval audiences with varied backgrounds and identities read and experienced the church in conflicting spatial and cultural ways. A digital surrogate stands apart from a static image because it integrates orientational reading and the palimpsestic qualities of architectural texts as paratexts that underlie phenomenological experiences of the church. Examples like the bilingual endowment charter, al-Idrisi's Book of Roger, and Ibn Jubayr's Riḥla act as cultural referents for the interpretations advanced by the digital surrogate and establish La Martorana as an exemplar within a wider practice of reading. This dissertation offers insight into the spatial-textual practices of reading for literate and illiterate audiences in the Middle Ages by inviting readers to experience the materiality of medieval spaces as phenomenological textual objects, even as it explores the removal of those space from time in their form as digital surrogates. The resulting project advocates for a methodological shift in digital literary study that emphasizes the integrations of architectural materiality and space into analyses of medieval textual culture.
