Goethe said "A museum should be never finished, but boundless and ever in motion." A new vision is needed with creative solutions. Museums are more than just cultural footprints of the past, but they also serve as signposts to future cultural movements which are critical to anticipate. Art museums hold and preserve art, natural history, our culture, and our civic history. This enables us to comment, interpret, and shape our world. They are a learning tool. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate three major museums in New York City and identify the institutional strengths that favor the needed flexibility to engage the communities they serve. Traits pertaining to vision, flexibility, risk-taking, funding, creativity, and approachability are key to successful museum-community relations. This thesis will use qualitative data to answer the question of what traits fine art museums must possess to continually support successful museum-community relationships over time.
