For English/Language Arts teachers instructing poetry can be a nightmare. Teachers and Pre-Service teachers alike feel unprepared to instruct poetry; therefore, it is either ignored, taught in prescriptive, formulaic models that disenfranchise students, or done hastily as part of larger units. As a result, the word "poetry" for students has become synonymous with difficult, confusing, and frustrating. However, what if there was a way to tap into students' existing knowledge in a creative new way that would engage students and give them voice in their interpretations? This is the investigation of my research - incorporating the visual arts in the poetry classroom as a method of instruction for students to engage in interpretations that elicit students' prior knowledge and build skills for analysis. This semester-long, qualitative case study of a college Introduction to Poetry class explored ways in which arts-based aesthetic response (Dewey, 1934; Rosenblatt, 1978) approach to content would impact students' interpretive abilities. Through classroom observations and close analysis of five focal students' reflections on learning through the aesthetic response approach, I found that introducing the visual arts-based approach to interpreting poetry enabled students to make deeper connections with texts and extrapolate meaning even in challenging works. The findings of this study suggest a need for inclusion of more purposeful, multimodal, arts-based poetry pedagogy in ELA classrooms.
