The organ music of Olivier Messiaen is characterized by subtle note value manipulations and passages that are compressed into segments of smaller duration. Because of the variety of metric subdivisions in Messiaen's music, performers have to consider two approaches to executing them. The first option is to maintain the proportions indicated in Messiaen's scoring. The second option is to treat various figurations as gestures, allowing for a more conversational pacing of musical passages. This treatise explores the viability of both options, informed by performance perspectives from the masterclasses of Jon Gillock and by in-person lessons and interviews with Colin Andrews. Additionally, there are passages in both works in which specific fingerings are indicated for each note. These fingerings were added directly by Messiaen, and they have significance concerning not only the technical approach but also the rhythmic emphasis, phrasing, and articulation. Chapter 2 applies these approaches in the performance of Messe de la Pentecote, and Chapter 3 applies these approaches in selected movements of Livre du Saint Sacrement.
