This dissertation posits French rap as popular music's modern-day heir of chanson francaise. The first chapter investigates the linguistic nuances of argot and verlan, highlighting their significance in bridging traditional and contemporary styles, and their resonance with working class and marginalized communities. Artists across generations have utilized these linguistic elements to create a cultural dialogue within their music, from Aristide Bruant's realist songs of the Belle Epoque to the contemporary verses of rap duo PNL. The second chapter presents a spatial analysis of French rap's ascent from the fringes of society to the cultural mainstream, redefining French identity and reflecting the socio-economic realities of the banlieues. The third chapter examines the performativity and audience dynamics within French popular music, showcasing hip-hop's trajectory from street performance to its esteemed place in French cultural institutions such as the Opera Bastille. This research underscores hip-hop's versatility and its homage to musical heritage, altering public perceptions and enriching the French cultural landscape. Chapter four delves into the global influences on French musical genres, tracing the integration of diverse instruments, rhythms and diasporic soundscapes from various cultures, thus defying stereotypes and enriching French national identity with a spirit of creative pluralism. This dissertation provides a critical perspective on the evolution of chanson to rap, revealing the music's role as a dynamic mediator of social change and a testament to the transformative power of cultural expression in contemporary France.
