Cranberry fruit rot (CFR) disease is a complex of 12-15 unique fungal species. In Wisconsin, growers lose up to 17% of their crop each year to CFR pathogens, but it remains an understudied pathosystem due to its complex nature. This work aimed to address the epidemiology, cultural, and chemical management of the CFR complex to benefit the cranberry industry and expand current knowledge of the pathosystem. Current CFR disease management relies on a limited number of fungicide chemistries. This research established baseline sensitivity of 30 isolates of Colletotrichum fioriniae, a prevalent and virulent CFR pathogen, against the 3 most common fungicides used in cranberry. Furthermore, cranberries are vegetatively propagated with no regulation or pre-planting treatments, which is a concern for pathogen introduction in new beds. Use of heat treatments on propagative material demonstrated the integrity of cranberry cuttings against heat treatments, as well as reduced mortality in cuttings inoculated with C. fioriniae. Additionally, an important unknown within the cranberry fruit rot complex is pathogen dispersal and introduction. There are many theorized avenues of inoculum introduction, with most focused on the vulnerable bloom period. Next generation sequencing (NGS) of flower tissue allowed for robust determinations of fungal communities present during bloom across multiple years and locations. In contrast to theory, NGS analysis revealed very low percentages of CFR pathogens present during bloom. Altogether, this work advanced knowledge of cranberry fruit rot pathogens sensitivity to fungicides, response to pre-planting heat treatments, and presence during bloom.
