Accessing mental health care services remains a challenge for many individuals. Clients often encounter confusion, frustration, and waitlists when searching for providers, leading to barriers in obtaining mental health support promptly. This quantitative descriptive study explored the alignment between how private practice therapists market their services and how individuals seek out mental health care. The project aimed to identify the most effective marketing strategies for increasing accessibility to mental health services. Data was collected through self-administered online questionnaires from two groups of participants within the Kansas City Area: private practice providers and individuals 18 years of age and older who sought therapy in the past 12 months. The findings indicate that online marketing strategies, such as search engines, websites, and online directories, are the primary methods used by individuals seeking therapy, with 92.3% of client participants engaging in online activities. Providers also predominantly utilize online methods (98.5%); however, discrepancies exist in the time investment between clients and providers. While clients dedicate significant time to searching for providers, providers invest less time into marketing techniques that align with client behavior. Additionally, clients value relational techniques, such as recommendations from friends, but providers emphasize promotional materials like business cards, which may not be as effective. A significant gap was also observed in event-based marketing, where clients invest more time than providers engaged in events. These findings highlight the need for private practice therapists to refine their marketing efforts by prioritizing online visibility and adjusting time investment to align with client behaviors, ultimately improving accessibility to mental health services.
