Within film studies, there has been a reconsideration of cinematography as the most important visual storytelling film component (and of the director as an individual creative author) and a push towards understanding-and further investigating-the role of production design within film and its contributions to visual storytelling. Where the topic of graphic props has been broached in scholarly literature, discussion is limited to either the physical placement of these devices within a film set or their individual usage by actors. This research investigates the role of graphic design for film, and more specifically the creation of graphic props by graphic designers for film. Through this, the abilities of these visual artefacts as visual storytelling devices are made explicit. To prioritize the perspective of graphic designer for film and the purposeful application of visual language, this project makes use of a qualitative, case study methodology that combines methods of visual analysis to address the graphic props and expert practitioner interviews to address the role of graphic designer for film. In total 50 graphic props and the responses from 5 graphic designers for film were analysed.Findings include how graphic props can make significant contributions to fictional film narratives through purposeful use of visual language for visual storytelling, including a working set of criteria to define these types of visual artefacts while supporting the varied outcomes of graphic design for film practice. Furthermore, the role of graphic designer in the creation of these types of visual artefacts (and the capabilities of graphic props in this process) are variably impacted by four key factors: (1) the director and production designer, (2) the audience and cultural referencing, (3) authenticity and historical accuracy, (4) budget, time, and legal clearances. This research presents a new perspective of visual storytelling that focuses on the visual language used by graphic designers in film, rather than the wider lens of production design or cinematography alone. And while these findings do not contribute to a generalised system or method for approaching the production of graphic props for visual storytelling, they do provide a foundation to interrogate the outcomes of graphic design for film practice through the lens of visual signifiers and visual storytelling.
