This ethnographic study explores tensions and conflicts among heterogeneous migrant workers with a focus on their stances towards different linguistic resources, positioning, and use of repertoires. This study is based on the fieldwork conducted at a Japanese restaurant in a Canadian cosmopolitan city, where the workers from Japan, Bangladesh, and Spain, among others, gather and work together. The restaurant poses conflicting linguistic demands for its operation: promoting a Japanese identity by adopting Japanese, while making such identity accessible to restaurant customers through the use of English. Thus, how the workers from diverse backgrounds differently engage in these linguistic demands becomes a critical issue of examination.Drawing on sociolinguistic concepts of linguistic capital, investment, positioning, and repertoire, the current study demonstrates how the workers (de)value and use Japanese and English as an integral part of their workplace practice. The data consists of observational field notes, gathering of relevant artifacts, semi-constructed interviews with the workers, as well as video-recorded daily staff meetings. Narrative analysis of the interviews reveals the workers' different stances towards Japanese and English as well as relevant positionings, based on their life trajectories, linguistic and professional competences, and ethno-racial backgrounds. It also illustrates that the workers' positionings serve as a crucial marker of distinction from other workers in the restaurant in justifying their stances towards linguistic resources. Ethnographic microanalysis of an exemplary instance of interaction that occurred in staff meetings demonstrates how the workers' different stances towards linguistic resources and positionings are made manifest in their interactional practices, particularly through their use of repertoires. It thus emphasizes repertoire as an important means for migrant workers to distinctively position themselves in relation to others.By using an arsenal of data sources and multi-layered analyses of the issues around linguistic capital, positioning, and repertoire, this study provides a complex account of the sociolinguistic phenomena experienced by diverse migrants in the context of globalization. In particular, this study highlights problematic consequences, such as precarity, tensions, and conflicts that the increasing mobility in globalization brings about among migrant workers by complicating how languages are perceived and used.
