The thesis is a study of the Audio-Lingual Method, the new method of teaching foreign languages. This study is based not only on the published opinions of professionals in regard to the Audio-Lingual Method but also on the views of teachers in ten Monmouth County High Schools who, themselves, are using this new method in their teaching of languages. Chapter I of this thesis discusses the cultural and practical values in teaching foreign languages. Chapter II is devoted to the philosophy of the new approach to foreign language teaching and also includes a summary of the opinions of Professor Nelson Brooks of Yale University. Chapter III is tracing the history of the Audio-Lingual Method. Technical components of the Audio-Lingual method are dealt with in Chapter IV. Chapter V is a discussion of the language laboratory, its use and the methods of testing. Chapter VI cites what some critics say about the Audio-Lingual Method. Finally, Chapter VII outlines the format and general procedures of teaching in the Audio-Lingual Method. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
