This dissertation traces the unwritten and unseen history of a social movement that has had an increasing impact on everyone that has had, or has known someone in their circle of love who has been given, a medical-psychiatric diagnosis. From this movement's inception in 1970, this research shows the increasing presence, visibility and empowerment of individuals who historically have been "systematically" put away, taken away, discredited, discounted, disabled, disrespected, dismissed and diagnosed as suffering from a biological disorder. The goals of this social movement are: (1) the securing and safeguarding of human and civil rights, (2) demedicalization of a social problem; and (3) last but not least, the empowerment of everyone in American society who has been called crazy. This has been achieved by the Psychiatric Consumer/Survivor Movement's consistent and focused demand for the legitimation of "self-help" services that are truly defined and controlled by their users needs, so that individuals can truly have a fair chance at recovering from complex problems that psychiatry has attempted to define, since the nineteenth century, as dominately medical. The research methodology has been a "manic" one: field research, historical documentation from primary and secondary sources; survey research; structured and unstructured interviews with professionals, activists and advocates; and "engaged" research in Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy and the United States. This research has found that we can confidently claim that the Psychiatric Consumer/Survivor Movement has subjected the medical-psychiatric profession to a re-examination of its theories, practices, and use and misuse of its resource authority, to what the researcher has conceptualized as its pre-shrinking stage (1970-1992). The success of this pre-shrinking of psychiatry has been documented in this dissertation as the silent, and often invisible work of the Consumer/Survivor Movement. All of this suggests that the doors of empowerment for all individuals on whom the medical-psychiatric profession had closed its "hearts and minds " in the past, and conventionally framed as a form of professional objectivity, are opening. In fact, psychiatry's cultural authority resulted in abusive treatment of powerless individuals, when listening to their real needs would have been the key to their authentic recovery, as this social movement has demanded since 1970: the struggle continues.
