This document, divided into five chapters, provides a lengthy biographical chapter on the life of Louis Vierne with some material taken from the principal French biography and other material gleaned from newspapers and other writings concurrent with Vierne's life. Many of the newspaper comments are in the form of concert reviews that provide a perspective of Vierne's ability as seen through the eyes of his peers. The first chapter also provides some clarification of the performance chronology of the major works for organ, notably the Cinquieme Symphonie pour orgue, Opus 47, and other keyboard and instrumental works whose documentation had not previously been verified. Within the French musical tradition, the training of blind organists has held a place of great importance and chapter two provides a brief history of that legacy. The understanding of this tradition helps place Vierne's comments on teaching and interpretation in a better light, fitting with the period. Chapters three and four offer some analysis of the miniature works for piano entitled Silhouettes d'enfants. Like many composers who write for children, Vierne's style comes through very clearly as much of the extraneous music used to create dense textures is swept aside, making these pieces accessible while producing a window through which interested scholars may view the true craft of composition. The fourth chapter takes this stylistic analysis into the composer's other works revealing his overall maturity from an early age, placing these fine compositions, sadly neglected, before the public. The final chapter, dedicated to the problems surrounding the source material, gives some explanation concerning the status of the Vierne manuscripts and editions as well as information on the problems in transmission. Vierne's limited vision certainly made composition a painful process; the accuracy of his music has suffered because of it demonstrating the need for further research into these overlooked manuscripts.
