The effects of iron and silicon on the solidification behavior of the commercial 7075 (Al-Cu-Mg-Zn-Fe-Si-Cr) aluminum alloy have been studied using differential scanning calorimetry, optical metallography, image analysis, and electron probe microanalysis. Four alloys with differing iron and silicon contents have been studied in order to determine differences in their solidification sequence as well as the amount of each solidification phase present throughout the solidification temperature range. It is found that the solidification phase formation sequence, as well as the amount of each solidification phase present during solidification, varies substantially based on very small changes in iron and silicon contents ($<$0.1 wt. %). The primary difference found in the solidification sequence is the type of iron bearing phases present. This difference as well as differences found in the amounts of each phase present during solidification (including liquid) may help to explain the apparent differences in mechanical behavior displayed by this alloy during commercial ingot casting. Included in this thesis are proposed solidification sequences for commercial 7075 alloys based on different iron and silicon contents. Also included are the results from the study on the amount of each phase present during solidification, for all four alloys studied. These results are then used to propose possible crack mechanisms, based only on solidification characteristics, for this alloy.
