Microalgae, a largely diverse group of organisms found in marine and freshwater environments, provide a variety of added-value products, namely pigments, antioxidants, polysaccharides, triglycerides, fatty acids, vitamins and biomass, that can be harnessed for commercial use in the feed, food, nutritional, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and fuel industries. Environmental factors, such as light, temperature, nutrient availability and salinity, influence microalgae at several levels, leading to alterations in the metabolic patterns, biochemical composition and biomass productivity that can be explored as stress strategies to promote the accumulation of compounds of interest. The influence of electric field processing on biological systems such as microalgae has been the topic of thorough investigation. Moderate electric field (MEF) application, low intensity electric fields ranging between 1-1000 V cm-1 in the form of sinusoidal/square waves, although thoroughly used in the food industry and in aiding extraction and microalgae biotechnology, is still scarce in the literature when compared to other electrotechnologies, with fundamental studies on its influence on microalgae growth being particularly limited. In the present work, the influence of MEF application on the growth of Pavlova gyrans, a unicellular microalgae mainly used in the feedstock market due to its biochemical composition and nutritional value, was assessed. Using different approaches, by applying the treatment in different growth stages, in varying treatment times and even during the dark phase of its photoperiod, possible alterations in P. gyrans growth and biochemical composition as a result of the stress caused by electric field application were investigated.Despite not promoting growth, MEF treatment influenced the biochemical composition and pigment content of P. gyrans - maximum increases of 85.8 and 66.1% in the Chlorophyll a and in the Carotenoid content and of 4.72, 18.7 and 5.41% in the lipid, carbohydrate and protein content were found as a result of treatment in separate experiments. Hence, with this study, the potential of MEF application in the promotion of biochemical composition alterations was proven. In the future, besides validating the results found, other approaches could be taken, for instance combining electric stress with other known stress strategies and applying electrotechnologies in the harvesting of compounds of interest from P. gyrans. Further investigation is also necessary in order to fully understand the fundamental causes at a cellular level of the effects found.
