The term metamaterial was first created in the late 20th century, describing materials with unusual properties not available in natural materials. The concept has since blossomed for electromagnetic, thermal, acoustic, and mechanical metamaterials due to fascinating properties, for instance, negative Poisson's ratio, high energy absorption, or high stiffness-to-density ratio of mechanical metamaterials. Metamaterials are not necessarily, but are usually periodic, with unit cell size, geometry, and arrangement deciding the metamaterial's physical properties. Once the local unit cells are fixed, the metamaterial properties become predetermined and non-tunable. This lack of reconfigurability limited these inactive metamaterials' applicability, particularly in scenarios with varying operational conditions. Thus, reconfigurable metamaterials are attracting more attention nowadays due to their versatility. Shape reconfiguration is a widely used strategy for active metamaterials through the active change of unit cell pattern, thus the physical properties and interrelated functionalities. Meanwhile, this flexibility poses challenges in design optimization and fabrication of active metamaterials. This thesis contributes to the advancement of active and reconfigurable metamaterials for more prosperous applications through the development of magneto-mechanical metamaterials from three aspects: 1) New designs and actuation mechanisms for multimodal deformation; 2) Multimodal deformation-induced widely tunable metamaterial properties for elastic and electromagnetic wave regulations; 3) Inverse design strategy for targeted shape morphing of magnetically actuated soft materials. Chapter 1 provides the necessary background for this emerging field. In Chapter 2, a novel symmetry-breaking actuation mechanism is introduced to achieve multimodal deformation in hard-magnetic soft materials, paving the way for tunable metamaterials with customizable properties. Chapter 3 demonstrates coupled magnetic actuation and mechanical loading for even enhanced shape and property tunability, such as controllable stiffness and elastic wave bandgaps. Chapter 4 explores functional applications of magneto-mechanical metamaterials conformal curved surfaces. First, reconfigurable electromagnetic metamaterials with customizable conductive patterns are showcased with versatile electromagnetic wave manipulations. Additionally, flipped bilayer metamaterial designs are presented, offering exceptional shape transformation for elastic waveguides. Then, Chapter 5 explores voxel-encoding direct ink writing printing of hard-magnetic soft materials for programmable magnetic property distributions, culminating in the design and fabrication of functional biomimetic soft robots through an evolutionary algorithm-guided approach. Finally, future works are discussed in Chapter 6.
