Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that when untreated leads to blindness. This disease damages the optic nerve, thus damaging the path for visual signals to the brain. For many types of glaucoma, high intraocular pressure is a well-known symptom that increases pressure on the optic nerve head, causing irreversible damage. The current treatments either try to promote fluid outflow or prevent fluid production of the eye. The treatments: eye drops, laser perforations, and surgery, have potential harmful side effects and are not suitable for everyone. This research focuses on exploiting the resonant frequencies of the eye structures to observe if it is possible to promote fluid outflow by exciting the drainage tissue without creating holes or stopping fluid production. Finite element simulations were configured in SolidWorks to compute the resonant frequencies of the eye structures. The simulations were utilized to discover frequencies that specifically resulted in high displacements of the drainage tissues. To validate the simulated results, an experimental set-up was created to replicate the fluid production structure, the ciliary body. A micro-pump connected to a series of syringes forced water through a needle into the anterior chamber of the eye, while a rocker arm coupled to a linear actuator transmitted the desired frequency. Simulations showed several promising physical modes at specific frequencies, but the physical experiments did not have a definitive conclusion. Results indicated that the drainage tissue in an ex vivo eye does not have the same behavior as an in vivo eye.
