Grapevine germplasm improvement is of paramount importance to the viticulture industry. Over the years, conventional breeding efforts have been to some extent successful in generating new commercial cultivars that bear enhanced quality produce under current production regimes. Nevertheless, the breeding strategy has limited application for developing innovative value-added cultivars because of the extreme heterozygosity of the grape genome, which is fostered by inbreeding depression. In this study, phenomics approaches of grape breeding were used as a new procedure of grape breeding to identify and evaluate the phenotypic parameters of phenological and reproductive growth performance traits of ninety muscadine grape genotypes. The target is to identify potential advanced selections that can be promoted into new commercially accessible cultivars for fresh fruit consumption and wine production. Phenomics is a fast-promising field of technology wherein detailed and targeted phenotyping can be completed in a high-throughput manner. Following the methodologies used to measure plant growth, cluster architecture, and berry composition at morphological, biochemical, and nutraceutical levels were undertaken. For fresh fruit, consumption standard cultivars 'Majesty', and 'Fry' were superior in overall performance. However, muscadine selections when compared to 'Noble' and 'Carlos' for wine processing, and consumption had a better result with three advanced selection potentials for red- and white- wine production. This research study will generate substantial fundamental knowledge that will not only enrich muscadine grape characteristics but will also assist grape breeders worldwide to exploit molecular mechanisms underlying valuable traits.
