This study addresses a pressing need in the social work community. While myriad studies have been conducted concerning the implementation of culturally competent values and practices in service of diverse racial and ethnic populations, relatively few such studies have been directed to the sexual minority community, and fewer still to sexual minority individuals on college campuses. Yet, continued incidences of crimes against sexual minorities-including bullying, harassment, and violence--and elevated rates of suicide among the sexual minority population, both in general and on college campuses, testify to the necessity of crafting inclusive and culturally competent policies to better serve this vulnerable population. This study investigates the connections that exist between counselors' religious and professional backgrounds and their level of cultural competence in serving sexual minority students. Counselors' demographic factors examined included gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, race and ethnicity. Counselors' professional factors examined included background, recent cultural competency training, overall years of experience, years at current institution, and job satisfaction. Data for this study were obtained online via Survey Monkey from 50 college counselors working in institutions of higher education all over the United States. The research design consisted of mixed methods of research, including both quantitative and qualitative data. The initial analysis identified three variables as significantly correlated with cultural competence: gender, recent cultural competence training, and sexual minority counselors. However, the multiple regression analysis showed that only one variable-variance in gender-was a significant predictor in the overall study, accounting for 18% of the model. The study includes discussion of implications for social work policy, practice and education.
