This article examines the discourse surrounding the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin in the years immediately following its publication. Scholarship of the novel is first analyzed, examining major critical themes about the novel's portrayal of black characters as well as its sentimentality. The theoretical foundation for the analysis is then developed, using Mikhail Bakhtin's idea of internally persuasive discourse to establish the potential for the novel's influence. A selection of responses that were published in newspapers from both the northern and southern United States are then analyzed, looking for indications that the novel inspired a compassionate response in its readers, and potentially changed their opinions about slavery. The conclusion is reached that the novel did influence its Northern readers, and also inspired great concern about this potential influence among its Southern readers. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of these findings.
