Statement of problem. There are no in vivo studies recording the effects of bimanual manipulation, chin point guidance, the leaf gauge and Lucia jig at the condylar level. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to record the three dimensional condylar position located utilizing four commonly used centric relation positioning methods. Materials and methods. Fifteen subjects who exhibited no symptoms of TMD and an Angle class I occlusion volunteered for this study. The SAM Axioquick Recorder was used to measure the differences between condylar positions achieved with a Lucia jig, Leaf gauge, Bimanual Manipulation and Chin Point guidance. Results. The CR techniques medians for Bimanual Manipulation, Chin Point guidance, Lucia Jig, and Leaf Gauge were 0.27, 0.40, 0.46, and 0.46 mm respectively. Conclusion. The four centric relation techniques are highly repeatable and produce clinically insignificant differences. Bimanual Manipulation and the Leaf Gauge technique exhibited the most superior and anterior placement of the condylar head.
