In the study of solar cells, a critical area of focus is understanding the fundamental limits of solar energy conversion and developing device configurations to achieve these limits. However, previous studies have primarily concentrated on the efficiency limits of reciprocal systems, where the Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation holds. This law states a balance between emissivity and absorptivity, creating an intrinsic loss mechanism in solar energy harvesting, as a light absorber must emit light back to the Sun. By using nonreciprocal elements, the Kirchhoff's law can be violated, allowing for efficiency improvements beyond typical reciprocal systems. In this Thesis, we explore the application of optical nonreciprocity to solar energy harvesting, investigating the ultimate efficiency achievable only by nonreciprocal systems and the device configurations that can reach this limit. We begin by reviewing key works on applying nonreciprocity to solar energy harvesting, including studies on designing structures that violate Kirchhoff's law using magneto-optical materials. Building on these foundational studies, we introduce our design of a semitransparent structure capable of violating the Kirchhoff's law. Next, we present a configuration of a nonreciprocal multijunction solar cell based on this semitransparent structure, demonstrating its ability to reach the ultimate efficiency of solar energy harvesting. We also prove that for single-junction solar cells, nonreciprocity does not enhance the efficiency limit. Finally, we extend the application of nonreciprocity to thermophotovoltaic systems, highlighting the performance improvements that can be achieved. By showcasing the potential of optical nonreciprocity, we believe this Thesis can demonstrate its benefits for more efficient solar energy harvesting, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future.
