Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown great promise in revolutionizing medical imaging interpretation, but the development of clinically useful AI models remains challenging. In this thesis, I explore three pivotal areas for advancement in the current landscape of medical imaging AI. First, I explore the integration of multimodal data sources in AI models, reflecting the real-world diagnostic processes that combine imaging with patient history and other clinical data. This approach aims to develop more comprehensive and accurate diagnostic tools. Second, I investigate the potential of self-supervised learning as an alternative to traditional supervised methods, focusing on its capacity to improve generalizability and reduce reliance on extensive labeled datasets. Third, I evaluate the clinical utility of AI tools in medical imaging, emphasizing the development of models that align with actual healthcare needs and can be seamlessly integrated into clinical workflows. Throughout the thesis, I present case studies, systematic reviews, and novel AI models that demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches in improving the performance and clinical utility of medical imaging AI. By synthesizing insights across these areas, I demonstrate how advanced AI methodologies can lead to significant improvements in the field of medical imaging, ultimately benefiting patient care and healthcare efficiency.
