Design elements within living, working, and meeting spaces impact psychological and cognitive performance. Elements such as daylight, view, biophilia, color, materials, and the floor plan can enhance or inhibit emotions and cognitive function. Historically, numerous facilities were designed and structured to maximize square footage and structural functionality for the lowest cost. Facilities such as schools, hospitals, and prisons were built similarly in their landmark and character, a situation identified as Isomorphism. The research focused on the impact of interior design on emotional and cognitive welfare in higher education facilities. The study site and population focused on communal and public spaces for students, faculty, and staff. The theoretical foundation was based on Maslow's hierarchy of human needs and Luthans's hierarchy of motivational needs. Design elements within the built environment influence physical and motivational needs, forming a bridge between both theories. The research study used a semi-structured qualitative methodology, and professionals from related fields, including architects, designers, and furniture specialists, were interviewed. The data supported commonalities between the participants and did not compare between the associated fields or professionals. Eight themes emerged from the data analysis: natural and artificial lighting/view, biophilia/natural elements, sound/acoustics, color/finishes, interior layout/furniture organization, isomorphism/issues within the built environment, current understandings in the built environment, and holistic design approaches. The themes examined design elements that enhance or inhibit deficiency needs and improve cognitive performance among students and academic personnel. Themes also examined elements and patterns that lead to higher levels of well-being for reaching self-fulfillment in higher education communal spaces.
