The dual self is a rapidly growing area of research that emerges from a traditionally collectivistic culture's inevitable encounter with the increased globalization of Western individualism. The current study illuminates the salient features of the emotional experiences and changes within dual self clients during psychotherapy. Qualitative content analysis of 10 Korean dual self clients was conducted to investigate the internal ambivalence state that results from competing cultural emotions and its shift to the internal integration state. The data revealed that dual self individuals actively hold both individual-oriented and social-oriented selves. The findings highlighted the detrimental impact of internal ambivalence which inhibits the individual-oriented self, in turn, disrupting the social-oriented self by straining significant interdependent relationships. In addition, other-focused processing was effective in strengthening the social-oriented self and restoring ruptured interdependence, which played a crucial role in resolving internal ambivalence and further fostering emotional individuality. However, without a functioning individual-oriented self, the ability to activate the social-oriented self was limited. The findings suggest that the emotional function of the social-oriented and individual-oriented selves are closely intertwined and should be carefully attended to during emotional processing. Based on these findings about the dynamical interplay between the two components of a dual self, clinical implications for treatment of dual self clients are provided.
