People who cannot rely on speech alone to be understood, who had few options to communicate, can now utilize augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to express themselves. However, because of cultural prejudice due to ableism and speechism, communication deviating from the norm can be a stigmatizing experience for people who use AAC. AAC mentoring programs can give people who use AAC a community of individuals who have disabilities who communicate in similar ways that they can relate with. These mentoring programs can teach self-advocacy and leadership skills to those who use AAC, which can help them navigate life challenges due to ableism or other factors. This dissertation focuses on utilizing the participant ethnographic research method and the autoethnographic method to evaluate three AAC mentorship programs through interviewing their participants, to assess how effective the programs are in teaching self-advocacy and leadership. Through this research the dissertation explains how mentees of these mentor programs acquire self-advocacy, camaraderie, communication skills, and achievement of their mentorship goals.
