This study was an exploration of knowledge management with virtual teams and its impact on successful project outcomes. The problem addressed was the high number of IT-related project failures in the United States that do not meet scope, schedule, budget, or quality requirements. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify knowledge creation, sharing, and integration strategies used with virtual project teams and determine how they were implemented to help promote an environment for project success. The growing use of virtual project teams exposes new possibilities and challenges for knowledge creation, sharing, and integrating this information across a diverse workforce to create an environment for project success. The study was centered around the Knowledge to Action (KTA) framework, which uses two continuous flow cycles, knowledge creation, and action cycle, which facilitate human interaction and social exchange of project knowledge with each other and the organization (Graham et al., 2006). Participants for this qualitative case study were recruited by email and were required to be over 18 years of age, a member of the targeted local PMI chapter in the South Central North America region, and have either been a member of or managed virtual (geographically or organizationally separated) project teams for at least two years. A total of twenty participants were interviewed via Zoom videoconferencing. All interviews were recorded, transcribed, and member-checked by the participants to ensure accuracy. NVivo software was used to code participants' transcripts pursuing themes and subthemes which are further developed in Chapter 4. Results reflected various strategies for knowledge creation and transferring that knowledge with team members and the organization, along with specific recommendations for implementing these strategies to create an environment for successful project outcomes. Future research might consider performing this study with a PMI local chapter outside the North American region to investigate knowledge management impacts on a more global scale. Additionally, determining what artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and generative AI (GenAI) tools and techniques are available to streamline and improve the knowledge management process could also be investigated.
