The use of emerging digital technologies has expanded across many industries and led to much innovation. At the time of this research, the concept of digital transformation fills the discussion space of modern industry across many sectors. An investigation was launched via literature review to determine whether mentions of digital transformation were just noise appearing within the literature and annual reports of mining companies, or whether there was something that remained at a deeper level. The literature investigation found that digital technology is not new to mining and many software solutions presently exist for mining specific solutions. However, there were many areas where the literature asserted that a digital transformation would be of benefit to mining and the review deconstructed the nuance between a software solution and a digital transformation. As a result of this nuance and the unwillingness of most mining companies to open up about their internal business practices, a digital transformation program was subsequently developed and executed in collaboration with a supporting company. This dissertation serves as a guide to the development of digital transformation programing within mining at both the abstract level, as well as for the specific use case of understanding the processes that drive rock pile construction.A hypothesis was proposed and a number of expectations were surpassed for assessing the effectiveness of digital transformation as a process that bears innovative fruit. While the hypothesis was proven true, the resulting research led to many more questions than it answered, and many new research directions have been identified that will likely lead to profitable growth for mining companies that adopt similar approaches into their core operational fundamentals. By way of results, this research answers many of the questions raised when investigating mining assets that contain underutilized data. It demonstrates how a digital transformation approach to these assets can create a path toward their greater understanding. Specifically, within the context of the scope of rock pile formation and dumping process understanding, this research lowers the technical hurdle keeping readily available data from being used by geostatistical domain experts. Furthermore, it parameterizes the dumping process in a way that cuts through the parsimony that hinders more efficient operational understanding. This research is a fundamental precursor to modelling how humans mine resources in the modern, mechanized era and its development provides a springboard for the creation of novel models of the mining process.
