My dissertation charts a transcontinental conversation about aesthetics, religion, and cultural renewal made possible by the translation of philosophical canons between Germany and China in the early twentieth century. The project centers on three case studies, beginning with the establishment of the German concession at Tsingtau (Qingdao) in 1898, and proceeding through the turbulent early Republican period in China, contemporaneous with Weimar Germany. In the first two chapters, on Richard Wilhelm's influential renderings of canonical Chinese texts, I chart the pressures of liberal Protestantism, Romantic notions of culture, and the Tsingtau colonial milieu on the terms he uses in translation. By bringing Chinese concepts into conversation with German ideas about education and religious experience, I argue, Wilhelm's translations embody a political ethic of open-mindedness in intellectual encounter. My reading of his lexical choices exemplifies the broader argument of the dissertation as a whole: Wilhelm's judicious use in his translations of the German word Bekehrung, I argue, undermines the exceptionalist valence of the word's Christian use by resituating the word in Chinese contexts, exerting pressure on the term for conversion itself. Conversely, in my third chapter, a study of scholar-revolutionary Cai Yuanpei's (1868-1940) translation of Schiller's "aesthetic education," I show how Cai deploys the term "aesthetic education" as a depoliticizing rhetorical strategy in the debate over the role religion should play in the new Chinese republic, subverting its conventions in order to shift the terms of the debate away from political renewal to individual aesthetic experience. Cai's version of aesthetic education redefined the contemporary conversation about educational goals and remains enshrined in Sinophone region state policy to the present day. Finally, in a fourth chapter on the self-positioning of the journal Critical Review (1922-1933) as an agent of translation, I show how the political debate that takes place in its pages is framed by the philosophical translations it chooses to print. The Chinese rhetoric around recuperating ancient traditions takes on a new shape in Critical Review's application thereof to Greek philosophy, which represents a distant echo of German philhellenism mediated through Benjamin Jowett's Plato. In each of these instances, I use translation as a lens for studying these transplanted canons and seek to shed light on both how they were reconstituted in their new contexts and what work they performed there.
