There exists an ongoing debate over the characteristics of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). This study investigated Walker's (2013) Fawn response (FR), which is theorized to be a reaction to childhood exposure to complex trauma. An individual exhibiting the FR behaves in a way that is other, rather than self-focused; it involves behaviors such as groveling, servitude, co-dependency, just to name a few. The FR has received little attention in the academic literature. However, psychodynamic theory provides theoretical support that the characteristic behaviors of the FR are representative of childhood complex trauma and repressed anger. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the strength of a psychotherapist's psychodynamic theoretical orientation was a predictor of their agreement that an individual portrayed in a vignette depicting the FR is a product of complex trauma and repressed anger. Stepwise multiple regressions revealed that psychotherapists with higher scores on the psychodynamic measure were statistically more likely to perceive that a fictitious client exhibiting the FR experienced childhood complex trauma and is afflicted by repressed anger. The results of this study imply greater support for psychodynamic theory, need for counseling programs to provide additional training in trauma, and lends support for the inclusion of C-PTSD in future editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
