It is common practice for Christian preachers to incorporate public prayers with their sermons. This study explores the understudied practice of homiletical prayer through the lens of rhetorical scholarship. It is argued that the most effective way to understand the rhetorical properties of these prayers is through the lens of indirect communication, particularly the theory of "overhearing." A close textual analysis was performed on three representative artifacts, revealing a nuanced rhetorical practice, which balances numerous ethical tensions in the delivery of persuasively efficacious messaging. Findings include central values and best practices leading to the foundation of a model beneficial to rhetorical/homiletical researchers and practitioners alike.
