This study seeks to firmly situate the imagination in preaching. Because the function of the sermon is to help guide the listener to a higher (and deeper) state of Christian living, the sermon is directed to the listener's imagination, suggesting a reality that does not yet exist. If, therefore, the sermon's function is directed towards the imagination, then the sermon should speak the language of the imagination. Following a theory of the imagination in which the human imagination envisions and, by metaphor, symbolism, and imagery, creates other "worlds" (i.e., future possibilities, heaven and hell, and the present, but unrealized, world) and works towards the conversion of the audience's imagination, this project will argue for the necessity of preaching with the imagination. The argument will appeal to examples from Scripture and exemplary Christian preaching (Chrysostom, Bernard of Clairvaux, Jonathan Edwards, J. T. Pugh.). It is not enough, however, to call for the use of the imagination, no matter how clearly defined. Many homileticians have agitated for a renewed emphasis on the imagination in preaching, and there is no evidence that preachers fail to try using the tools of the imagination in their preaching. There is, however, less emphasis placed on the importance of the disciplined imagination, that is, the disciplined use of metaphor, imagery, analogy, hyperbole, and symbolism in preaching. In addition to discussing the cultivation of the imagination in the work of the gospel, this study will largely focus on providing concrete solutions for developing and disciplining the preacher's imagination. This project describes and characterizes the problem of the preacher's imagination in Chapter 1, discusses the experts who have attempted to address the problem in Chapter 2, and provides a biblical and theological foundation for a solution in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, attention is given to project design. Here, a curriculum is presented that targets the cultivation of the imagination, sensitizes the preacher to the imaginative material inherent in his or her own life, and develops strategies for governing the imagination's work in the sermon. Finally, Chapter 5 uses qualitative analysis to provide the results of the curriculum's use.
