Access to parks and greenspaces are increasingly important issues for a rapidly urbanizing world. The field of park equity studies the ethical distribution of public amenities and greenspaces. The park equity literature suggests that neighborhoods in the United States (U.S.) with high socioeconomic status (SES) and non-Hispanic White composition have advantaged access to greenspace. In this dissertation, I use novel analytic approaches to assess inequities in park access for broad racial/ethnic groups based on within-group ancestry (national origin) and interactions with socioeconomic status at the individual level. I utilize U.S. Census microdata accessed from a secure Wasatch Front Federal Statistical Research Data Center, fine-scale data on parks, and spatial and statistical analyses to investigate park equity in the United States. Chapter 2 compares alternative techniques for measuring area-weighted measures of park access and how they affect inferences regarding patterns of park access in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area (i.e., Miami MSA). My findings indicate weak relationships between the park access measures. However, each park access measure yields similar results for race- and SES-based patterns of park space inequity. Findings suggest that each measurement technique may be adequate for assessing park equity at the census tract level and that efforts are required to increase access to park space for marginalized groups in the Miami MSA. Chapter 3 uses individual-level U.S. Census microdata from the American Community Survey (ACS) and an intracategorical inequality framework to assess inequities in park access measured at the census block level in the conterminous United States. I innovate here by analyzing national intracategorical park inequities for the major Asian, Black, Hispanic, Native American, and White racial/ethnic categories based on ancestry. Results indicate that White people have considerably more park area per capita nationally compared to people of color. Chapter 4 examines individual-level intersectional inequities in park access (measured at the census block level) based on race/ethnicity and housing tenure in Los Angeles County, California. Using interaction modeling techniques and individual-level U.S. Census ACS microdata, this study advances knowledge by exploring and documenting the interactive role of race/ethnicity and SES in shaping park access.
