Urban green spaces, including parks, gardens, and urban forests, are not just elements of urban environments but crucial components. They offer ecological benefits such as pollutant filtration, mitigation of the urban heat island effect, and promotion of biodiversity. These spaces also provide significant health benefits by encouraging physical activity, improving mental well-being, and reducing the risk of respiratory diseases. As a result, they play a critical role in fostering sustainable, livable cities. This paper examines efforts to enhance and expand green spaces in large cities, primarily focusing on New York City. Despite these efforts, disparities persist in low-income neighborhoods in New York City, including limited access to urban green spaces and the risk of displacement due to green gentrification. This thesis addresses these disparities and provides effective recommendations to emphasize the importance of inclusive urban planning practices to ensure equitable access to urban green spaces for all residents.
