This investigation synthesizes findings from three independent studies that explore different geospatial analysis applications using remote sensing data and technology to help urban foresters and planners make informed decisions, optimize resource allocation, and promote more sustainable forestry management practices. The three studies include: the quantification and impact of urban tree canopy (UTC) shade effects on microclimates, the hierarchical modeling of urban heat dynamics, and the application of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) in urban forestry. The first investigation introduces a new approach to urban tree canopy (UTC) shade analysis, employing conventional remote sensing and high-resolution unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) data to offer a detailed understanding of the cooling effects of tree shade, surpassing traditional UTC metrics. This methodology provides a more accurate representation of urban forestry's benefits but also advocates for the integration of shade mapping in urban forest planning to mitigate heat effectively. The second study advances the field through the application of multi-level hierarchical linear modeling to dissect the complex dynamics of urban heat, revealing the nuanced interplay between land cover, land use, and temperature at different urban scales. This research supports a more informed multi-scale approach to creating cooler, sustainable urban environments, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions that address the specific characteristics of diverse urban landscapes. The final study explores the use of UAS data technology in urban forestry, evaluating its potential for enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of certain management practices, and discussing future innovations in sensor technology and methodology that could progress the field. Collectively, this research demonstrates the power and utility of integrating remote sensing data and technology with geospatial and quantitative analysis methods, to advance urban forest management and planning practices. The insights gained from these investigations are invaluable for urban planners, policymakers, and environmental scientists striving to enhance the resilience and sustainability of urban ecosystems in the face of growing environmental challenges.
