Herein we present the results of a series of investigations on the interactions of hybrid perovskites with amine vapors. Building upon previous work with the deliquescence of methylammonium lead iodide with methylamine, we show that this phenomenon extends to the layered Ruddlesden-Popper variety of hybrid perovskites. Further, we report that hybrid perovskites undergo a chemical transformation when exposed to a vapor environment of mixed amine composition, resulting in the formation of a layered perovskite whose stoichiometry and structure are determined by the exact composition of the amine atmosphere. Furthermore, we performed fundamental investigations into the deliquescent behavior of hybrid perovskites with amine vapor via in situ quartz crystal microbalance measurements, showing that the perovskites proceed step-wise through a crystalline intermediate en route to full solvation. We simulated the structure of this intermediate for methylammonium lead iodide via density functional theory and corroborated the result with X-ray diffraction measurements. We also showed that changes in dissipation of the quartz crystal can be detected when an adhered methylammonium lead iodide layer was exposed to amine vapor atmospheres with varying composition, providing an indirect measure of the ratio of incorporated amines, a proxy for the ammonium cation ratio in the films that dictates structure and optoelectronic properties. Finally, we report on initial efforts to leverage these vapor interactions in attempts to grow bulk single crystals and single crystal thin films of methylammonium lead iodide.
