Urban sidewalks are often seen as immovable structures ubiquitous in the built environment. Unfortunately, this defining characteristic makes it easy for this important pedestrian infrastructure to be neglected in urban planning discourse as a dynamic facet of public life. They are often overlooked because they are such permanent features of cities. However, it is their permanency and ubiquity that makes them involved in public life at all hours of the day and night and thus should be given more attention as public space. But what, when, and where do certain sidewalk features support their roles in the public realm? Previous studies have captured and outlined such elements of the sidewalk but only a few presented these findings in visually captivating ways that reflect their significance in the built environment. This thesis combines a few of these methods to assess the ease of walkability (EOW) in Boston Chinatown over two periods of time in a day. This study's methodology contains two major components: a physical assessment of the sidewalks and data visualizations in ArcGIS software followed by photo-editing techniques to present the observations in explorative ways to visualize sidewalk walkability. This study finds that all observed sidewalk features contribute to EOW in various degrees, some features affect EOW at certain times of the day, and sidewalk EOW varies geographically by zoning subdistricts. Furthermore, these methods illustrate new opportunities for displaying data that planners, engineers, and urban designers can use to inform their designs for better pedestrian infrastructure.
