Women's access to higher education began to increase dramatically in the 1970s. At the same time, academic knowledge has also been increasingly relied on for organizational or policy decision-making - making academic knowledge production an integral part of the new knowledge economy. Taking inspiration from the scholarship on evaluation and legitimation and the scholarship on gender and evaluation, this dissertation examines the impact of women's increased participation in social scientific knowledge production. I do so through a mixed-methods approach that examines both micro-level interactions and macro-level historical trends in the production and evaluation of knowledge. The first chapter uses qualitative observations and interviews on small groups simulating a social scientific knowledge production process. The second and third chapter use computational and statistical methods to analyze a large dataset of sociology and economics articles published between 1970-2015 (N=17,006). Together, these chapters illustrate the role in which gender plays in how knowledge is produced and evaluated. Understanding gender inequality in social science knowledge production is consequential for reflecting on who gets to be an expert on social issues as well as what kinds of knowledge are used for addressing these critical issues.
