The efficient utilization of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a viable fuel for fuel cells represents a promising approach to advancing sustainable energy technologies. However, the efficiency and selectivity of H2O2 fuel cells are constrained by mixed potential issues at the cathode. This thesis addresses the mixed potential challenges of H2O2fuel cells through advanced cathode engineering, material optimization, and integration with microfluidic platforms, leading to enhanced performance. The initial phase of this investigation focuses on a comprehensive analysis of the electrochemical behavior of various metal oxide cathodes, with a particular emphasis on tungsten trioxide (WO3). Optimization strategies, including the refinement of material composition, thickness, and surface characteristics, were implemented to mitigate mixed potential effects and enhance selectivity for hydrogen peroxide reduction. Notably, the co-deposition of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) with WO3 yielded a 175% improvement in power density while maintaining high catalytic selectivity. Furthermore, the Electronic Oxide-Metal Interaction (EOMI) effect was introduced to enhance the electron transfer process at the interface, thereby improving overall catalytic activity and stability.Building on these advancements, a microfluidic fuel cell was developed that has a three-dimensional porous cathode structure, combined with tortuous pathways for electrolyte flow. Such a design enhances mass transport and increases surface area-to-volume ratios, resulting in substantial improvements in the efficiency of the H2O2 fuel cell. The optimized microfluidic fuel cell achieved a power density of 27.6 mW/cm2, surpassing previously reported values and exhibiting an active volume power density comparable to that of solid oxide fuel cells. Moreover, the practical implications of this work extend to the development of a self-powered hydrogen peroxide sensor capable of detecting H₂O₂ concentrations ranging from 0.25 mM to 250 mM with rapid response times. This sensor is well-suited for integration into System-on-Chip (SOC) platforms, offering real-time, portable diagnostic capabilities for environmental, biological, and industrial applications.
