A particular interest to community college instructors has been the age diversity or generational differences among their students. Since each generation has its own set of values, preferences, and outlooks (Carpenter, 2018), it stands to reason that multigenerational community college students come to higher education with different preferences and motivations. The purpose of this study was to explore the differences between multi-generational community college students' motivations and learning preferences. Data were collected from the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and student demographics. The sample for this study consisted of Mississippi community college students enrolled in General Psychology. Nine hundred and seventy-four students responded to the student questionnaire (n = 974). To analyze the data, One-way ANOVAs and a linear regression were conducted.One-way ANOVAs found significant impacts for the student learning preferences of cognitive/metacognitive strategies (p<.001) and resource management strategies (p = .013) based on generation. One-way ANOVAs found significance for the student motivations of value (p<.001) and expectancy (p=.024) based on generation. A linear regression yielded moderate correlations between student learning preferences and student motivations for Millennials and Generation Z. Multi-generational community college students have a learning preference of effort regulation and do not prefer peer learning nor help seeking. Multi-generational community college students have an extrinsic goal orientation along with task value. Test anxiety is not a motivational factor for multi-generational community college students. Instructors and administrators can use this data to develop instructional strategy that incorporates student freedom and regulation.
