Through the lens of a qualitative exploratory case study, the researcher set out to understand the influence of early intervention on the elementary school experience of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Southern Maine, located in the northeastern United States. The researcher interviewed seven special education teachers to explore the influence of early intervention on their students with ASD. The exploration delves deeply into the influences of early intervention on the student's developmental and academic success in elementary school. The results of this study may be useful to special education teachers, general education teachers, principals, special education administrators, school psychologists, early intervention educators, autism specialists, and others in the field of autism. Recurring themes emerged through patterns in the data, which showed that early intervention has a positive influence on elementary school children with autism. The five themes presented in this study are: the importance of early intervention, the importance of social skills, the importance of individualized education, the significance of brain-based learning, and the significance of educating the educator. The study results showed that further research is needed on the influences of early intervention in elementary school children with autism. Areas for future research are listed below:Larger sample size w/ same research design and study methodologyInclude general educators in studyDo a study on support for parents at school-age versus early childhoodThe case study was a culmination of early intervention research, autism research and the perspectives of seven experienced special education teachers all melded into one.
