Virtual worlds, specifically for online gaming (e.g., RuneScape, Roblox, Minecraft, World of Warcraft) existed long before virtual reality (VR) type games were made available. There has been a steady rise in metaverse environments where some people tend to socialize more online than in real life. Threat actors are aware that more and more children are gaining widespread access to the internet and are socializing more in virtual (gaming) worlds. The research explored in this study focuses on how threat actors are leveraging their presence in immersive online environments to exploit children for illicit intent, such as sexual and/or terrorism-related activities. The participants interviewed in this study are professionals who have worked in the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force teams in law enforcement across the United States. Qualitative data was collected during a 5-month period via these interviews to understand the individual experiences from ICAC professions during their investigations. The collected data was analyzed to showcase how threat actors are grooming children in these environments, the tactics and techniques they use, and to understand what measures could be taken to mitigate these occurrences. The research aims to provide substantial information gathered from ICAC Task Force teams to encourage and assist with other scholars' research endeavors to create safer online (gaming) environments for children.
